Newport News, Virginia - The 10th-ranked Trinity women's team won the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region Championship Saturday, while the Tiger men finished in fifth place
The Tiger women captured the Regional Championship with a score of 80 points, beating runner-up Emory (GA) University by a mere three points in the 6k event. Thirty-four teams competed in the meet, which was hosted by Christopher Newport University.
The regional title is the first for either Trinity team since the women won in 2013 and it also marks the fifth women's championship in program history.
With the win, Trinity's women qualify for next week's NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships at Elsah, Illinois. The last time the Tigers qualified for nationals as a team was in 2013, also on the Newport News course.
Trinity's women have now placed a team or individual at the NCAA Championships for 10 of the past 11 seasons.
Molly McCullough led four All-Region Trinity runners, finishing in third place among a field of 240 runners. McCullough broke the school record with a time of 21:26.6 in today's race, breaking the 2008 mark set by current Head Coach Emily Daum (Loeffler) at the NCAA Championships meet in 2008.
McCullough was All-Region for the third straight season, and was joined by Haley McFadden, Laura Taylor, and Emma MacEachern as All-Region honorees. McFadden and Taylor finished fourth and sixth, respectively, and were just seconds behind McCullough. McFadden's time of 21:29.4 also broke the previous Tiger record, while Taylor is now a two-time All-Region runner.
MacEachern earned All-Region honors for the third time in four seasons, finishing 28th in today's event.
The Trinity men's fifth-place finish among 31 squads is an improvement from last year's eighth-place standing.
In a pack of 222 runners, first-year Harry Bellow earned All-Region honors with a 28th-place performance, turning in a time of 25:24.27. Senior Austin Brown finished 32nd, and picked up All-Region accolades for the third straight year.
The Tiger women will compete Saturday, November 18, at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Elsah, Illinois.
