San Antonio - The Trinity volleyball team has been selected as the second-place finisher in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), according to a vote of the league's head coaches.
Led by 35th-year Head Coach Julie Jenkins, the Tigers received 90 points in the poll, along with two first-place votes. Defending champion Colorado College amassed 98 points and eight first-place votes. Trinity has also been ranked 17th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Coaches Preseason Poll.
Last season, the Tigers took third place in the SCAC Championship, sweeping the University of Dallas (TX). Trinity was upset in a four-set match by Southwestern (TX) University in the conference semifinals. The Tigers received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, marking the 24th occasion Trinity competed in the NCAA postseason event. Aurora (IL) University eliminated the Tigers in the opening round.
Trinity completed the 2018 season with a 15-1 conference record, 25-7 overall, and a #17 national postseason ranking.
A key returner is senior setter Katrina Lieberman, who was elected to the All-SCAC First Team, the AVCA All-West Region Team, and the AVCA All-America Honorable Mention Team. Lieberman amassed 1,245 assists last season and was ranked 10th in Division III. She stands in 11th place in Trinity's single-season record books.
Sophomore middle blocker Emily Ellis was tabbed for the All-SCAC Second Team and finished second in conference hitting percentage at .346.
Senior right-side player/middle blocker Maggi Linker was fifth in conference hitting percentage at .318. Junior outside hitter Avery Tuggle was second on the Tigers team with 282 kills (2.47 per set) and digs with 337 (2.96 per set). Junior outside hitter Annie Rose Leggett was second in service aces, firing in 43 during the season. Leggett also had 273 digs (2.35 per set) in her column.
The Tigers open their 2019 season at home August 30-31 with the Trinity National Invitational. Trinity's first home SCAC matchup is slated for September 26 with Schreiner (TX) University.
