#9 Volleyball Upset in SCAC Tournament Semifinals

Irving, Texas - The ninth-ranked Trinity volleyball team was upset 3-1 by Southwestern (TX) University in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.



The second-seeded Tigers were eliminated from the main draw by #3 seed Southwestern, as the Pirates prevailed 25-23, 26-24, 11-25, and 25-21.

The two teams were nip-and-tuck for most of the first set and the lead was never more than three points the entire game. Trinity rallied from a 15-17 deficit to take a 20-18 lead, but Southwestern came back with two point to tie it up for the 12th time of the set. With the Tigers leading 23-22, the Pirates took three straight points to take a 1-0 match lead.

The second set was much like the first until Southwestern fought its way to a 15-11 lead to force a Tiger timeout. Trinity came out of the break with six straight points to make it a 17-15 Tiger lead. The teams went back and forth the rest of the way and the Pirates held a 24-22 lead and were serving for the set. The Tigers tied it up with two unanswered points at 24-24, but Southwestern took the next two for a 2-0 lead.

The third set saw Trinity jump in front with a 9-3 run at the start, but Southwestern took five unanswered points to cut the lead to just one. The Tigers allowed just three points the rest of the way, though, including seven straight points to close the set to make it a 2-1 overall deficit.

The fourth set was similar to the first two as the score remained close throughout. Southwestern broke a 17-17 by scoring four of the next five to pull in front 21-18. Trinity made it a 20-22 deficit to get back in the game, but the Pirates scored three of the next four to close out thet match.



Trinity now stands at 24-6 overall this season, while Southwestern improved to 18-11 on the year.

Katrina Lieberman posted a double-double of 41 assists and 17 digs.

Sarah Mullens recorded a team-leading 19 digs. Trinity's all-time digs leader has chalked up 1,994 in her career.

Madeline McKay led the team with 11 kills, followed closely by Jade Schoenberger with 10 kills of her own.

Avery Tuggle contributed 14 digs and Annie Rose Leggett had 13.

Trinity missed competing in the SCAC championship match for the first time since 2010.



The Tigers will play the fourth-seeded host University of Dallas (TX) for third place at 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
