Seguin, Texas - The 10th-ranked Trinity volleyball team defeated Schreiner (TX) University 3-1 and host Texas Lutheran University 3-0 Saturday in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Divisional.
Trinity beat Schreiner 25-13, 25-11, 21-25, 25-12 in the opening match of the day.
The Tigers jumped out to an 8-0 first-set lead over the Mountaineers in the first set and never looked back. The same was true in the second stanza, as the Tigers held a 10-1 advantage at one point in the match.
The third set was an entirely different story, as Schreiner rallied and closed to 8-10. The Mountaineers took over the lead 13-12, and Trinity quickly evened the score to 13-13. Schreiner won four points in a row and led 18-15. After a Trinity point, Schreiner took three in a row to go up 21-16. Trinity closed the gap to 20-22, but Schreiner won the next two points and led 24-20. A kill shot by Trinity made it 21-24, but the Mountaineers captured the third set.
The Tigers' found their rhythm again in the first set and jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. There was no looking back for Trinity as they took the match by a commanding margin.
Trinity then battled its way past Texas Lutheran, winning 25-23, 27-25, 26-24.
The Tigers were behind 9-10 in the opening set and later tied the score at 19-19. Three straight points gave Trinity a 22-19 advantage, before TLU closed to 23-24. A Bulldog service error gave Trinity the win in the first set.
Texas Lutheran tied the second set at 15-all, when Trinity won the next two points. After a TLU point made the count 16-17, Trinity went on a 4-0 run and led 21-16. The Bulldogs again tied the score at 24-24, and took the lead on the next point. Two Tiger kills shots and a Bulldog attack error gave Trinity the 2-0 lead in sets.
The battle continued in the third, as Trinity led 19-14. TLU kept plugging away at the lead, winning six points in succession to lead 23-22. A Tiger kill shot tied the match, and Trinity again took the lead at 24-23. Texas Lutheran benefitted from a Trinity service error at 24-24. The next two kill shots assured a Trinity sweep of the day.
The Tigers have now won eight consecutive matches and have an overall record of 18-4, along with a 10-0 SCAC mark.
Schreiner stands at 2-20 and 1-9 SCAC, while Texas Lutheran is 6-17 and 3-7 in conference play.
Sarah Mullens posted a team season-high 32 digs against Texas Lutheran and now moves in the top-15 Trinity single-match record books. Mullens also led the team in the Schreiner match with 12 digs.
Katrina Lieberman chalked up 49 assists against Texas Lutheran and 22 in the matchup with Schreiner for 71 on the day. Lieberman reached 1,900 career assists.
Madeline McKay hit .343 against the Bulldogs, while posting 15 kills.
Emma Funk hit .385 in the match with TLU, along with firing in 13 kill shots.
Jade Schoenberger hit .562 against Schreiner to go with her 10 kills and four blocks. Schoenberger produced 12 kills in the match with TLU.
Annie Rose Leggett had a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs against Schreiner, as well as serving up four aces.
Trinity will host the SCAC Divisional next Saturday and Sunday. First up Saturday will be Johnson & Wales (CO) University at 11:00 a.m., followed by a match with fifth-ranked Colorado College at 3:00 p.m.
