Bloomington, Illinois - The sixth-ranked Tiger volleyball team dropped a pair of matches against teams ranked in the top 20 nationally to open its part in the Holliday Inn Express Classic II Tournament.
Trinity opened tournament play with a competitive 3-1 loss to #19 University of Chicago (IL), falling 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, and 24-26. The day ended with a five-set loss to #18 Illinois Wesleyan University. The Tigers won 25-22 and 25-16 to start the day's finale, but the host school rallied with set wins of 25-23, 30-28, and 15-13 to escape with the match victory.
Katrina Lieberman had a pair of strong matches, beginning with 47 assists and nine digs against Chicago, then tying her career-high with 57 assists to go with 17 digs against Illinois Wesleyan.
Emily Ellis also had a good start to the tournament, finishing her day by tying for the team lead with 16 kills against Illinois Wesleyan. She also hit .500 or better in both matches, adding eight kills against Chicago, and recording a total of nine blocks in the two matches - including a team-best five blocks in the finale.
Sarah Mullens finished the day with 45 total digs, picking up more than 20 in each match. She also had a team-best three service aces against Illinois Wesleyan.
Avery Tuggle picked up a pair of double-doubles for the Tigers, picking up 13 kills and 11 digs against Chicago, then tying for the team lead with 16 kills and 12 more digs in the second match of the day.
Madeline McKay also reached double-figure kills in both matches, which included a team-best 15 kills against Chicago.
Trinity will conclude the tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday, taking on Rose-Hulman (IN) Institute of Technology at 1:00 p.m., followed by Millikin (IL) University at 3:30 p.m.
