San Antonio - The Trinity volleyball team has been ranked 11th in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Coaches Preseason Poll.
Led by 34th-year Head Coach Julie Jenkins, the Tigers open their campaign August 31 by hosting the two-day Trinity National Invitational. Included in the lineup is seventh-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (MN) College, along with Aurora (IL) University, who received votes in the AVCA poll.
The Trinity Fall Classic opens September 7, when Trinity meets top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) Colleges, the defending NCAA Division III champion. Tournament competitor University of Texas-Dallas also received votes in the preseason poll.
The Tigers host the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Divisional October 20-21, which features third-ranked Colorado College.
Trinity completed the 2017 season with a 27-8 record and a #11 final national ranking. The Tigers were runners-up to then top-ranked Colorado College in the SCAC Championship. Trinity earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and competed in its 23rd NCAA postseason event. The Tigers lost a hard-fought decision to Pacific Lutheran (WA) University in the first round.
Coach Jenkins reached two milestones during the 2017 season. She made SCAC history by claiming her 300th conference victory, becoming the first coach in any sport to accomplish that feat. Later in the season, Coach Jenkins earned her 900th career win.
Among the returnees is senior outside hitter Madeline McKay, who earned AVCA All-West Region Honorable Mention accolades for the second straight year. Senior defensive specialist Sarah Mullens joined McKay on the All-SCAC First Team last season, while sophomore outside hitter Avery Tuggle was elected the SCAC Co-Freshman of the Year.
