San Antonio - The 17th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team opens the 49-team NCAA Division III Championship Saturday at Claremont, California.
Trinity (13-6) meets fifth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer (CA) Colleges at 2 p.m. PDT Saturaday in the second round at Claremont McKenna (CA) College. Second-ranked and defending NCAA champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) Colleges will take on the winner of #31 Linfield (OR) College and the University of Texas at Dallas in the second round.
The third round is scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m. PDT with the winner advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals May 20 at Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Semifinals and Championship are scheduled for May 21-22. On Wednesday, the NCAA will announce the Singles and Doubles competitors with the events slated for May 24-26, also at Kalamazoo.
In the West Region, the Tigers hold a #4 ranking. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is the top-ranked team, Pomona-Pitzer is second, and Linfield is sixth.
Led by fifth-year Head Coach Gretchen Rush, the Tigers will compete in their eighth NCAA Tournament in a row and the 23rd overall. Trinity earned an automatic bid by winning its eighth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and the 23rd in program history.
Last season, the Tigers fell to Pomona-Pitzer in the second round at Claremont. Trinity won the NCAA Championship in 2000 and has been runner-up on two occasions. The Tigers also advanced to the NCAA Semifinals 10 times.
