San Antonio - The 21st-ranked Trinity women's tennis team opened its spring season with an 8-1 loss to NCAA Division I member Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Friday at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.
The Islanders (1-0) started the match by sweeping all three doubles. Zoe Kaffen and Mary Kaffen fell on the top line, Caroline Kutach and Megan Flores came up short at #2 doubles, while Ashley DeBauge and Hanna Rafferty lost in the third match.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi opened singles with a #2 line win in straight sets, with DeBauge playing for the Tigers. Flores lost the #6 match in two sets, as did Kutach on the top line, and De Leon at #4.
Zoe Kaffen lost the first set 1-6 of #3 singles, battled back to take the second 6-2, and then lost 1-6 in the third.
Trinity's lone victory of the day occurred at #5 singles. First-year transfer student Hailey Feuer, who came to campus from Hofstra (NY) University, won the first set 6-3, and then fought her way to a 7-6 (4) second-set decision.
Trinity (0-1) hosts Division II opponent St. Mary's (TX) University at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2.
