Tigers Advance Doubles Team to Final Day of ITA Regionals

San Antonio - Trinity standouts Mary Kaffen and Zoe Kaffen advanced to the finals to highlight the Tiger team competing at the ITA South/Southwest Regional Championships on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Tigers had three of the four doubles teams in Saturday night's "A" draw semifinals, including the top-seeded team of Mary and Zoe Kaffen. The Trinity twins earned an 8-1 win over the team of Stephanie Joseph and Sumvruta Iyengar from the University of Texas-Dallas to start the day, then defeated Tiger teammates Ashley DeBauge and Hannah Rafferty in the semis.

DeBauge and Rafferty upset #3 seeds Diana Carvajalino and Melody Duong of Austin (TX) College by a score of 8-6 to advance to the match against their Trinity teammates.

The second-seeded team of Megan Flores and Caroline Kutach also started the day with a narrow 9-8 (7-5) doubles win over #5 seeds Elisa Kendall and Kaleigh Smith of East Texas Baptist University. Flores and Kutach were then upset by #4 seeds Frida Mudsam and Kathy Joseph from Texas-Dallas. Mudsam and Joseph will face off against Mary and Zoe Kaffen in Sunday's championship.

In the "A" singles action on Saturday, top-seeded Kutach defeated teammate Zoe Kaffen 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals, while DeBauge and Flores were both beaten in straight sets in the quarterfinals. Kutach was later denied a chance to play for the singles title in a 7-5, 6-3 loss to third-seeded Joseph from Texas-Dallas.

A pair of Tiger players also reached the "B" singles semifinals with wins on Saturday. Paulina Garcia won 6-0, 6-0 over Claire Huffine of McMurry (TX) University, while Abby Watson earned a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win against Claire Austin of Concordia (TX) University. The two Trinity teammates will each face off against a pair of Southwestern (TX) University teammates in the semifinals, and the winners will play for the "B" draw championship tomorrow.
