San Antonio - Trinity women's tennis Head Coach Gretchen Rush and Assistant Coach Jacob Carrillo have received high honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Coach Rush was selected as the 2018 Wilson ITA Division III West Region Women's Coach of the Year. Coach Carrillo was tabbed as the tasc Performance ITA Division III West Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
The two coaches guided the 20th-ranked Tigers to a 13-11 overall record and a 13-7 mark against Division III opponents. Ranked third in the West Region, Trinity won its seventh consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship and advanced to the NCAA Championship. Seventh-ranked Pomona-Pitzer (CA) Colleges ended Trinity's dual-match season in the NCAA second round.
Coach Rush is in her fourth year at the Tigers' helm and has compiled a match record of 56-38 (.596). Trinity has advanced each of her four seasons to the NCAA Tournament and won an equal number of SCAC Championships. Coach Rush is a 1986 graduate of Trinity and won the 1983 NCAA Division I Doubles Championships. After her collegiate playing days, the four-time All-American went on to a successful career in the professional ranks.
Coach Carrillo is in his second year on the Trinity staff. He came to campus from his alma mater, Howard Payne (TX) University, where he served as the assistant coach for the Yellow Jackets men's and women's tennis teams from 2014-2016. Coach Carrillo was also a four-year letter winner on Howard Payne's men's team.
While its dual-match season has concluded, Trinity will have a representative at the NCAA Women's Singles Championship. Junior Caroline Kutach will compete at the event May 24-26 at Claremont, California. Kutach was earlier elected the SCAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year, while earning a slot on the All-SCAC Team for the third consecutive time.
