Orange County, California - The 18th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team defeated 24th-ranked Linfield College 6-3 in the first contest of their Spring Break trip to California.
Trinity started off the match strong and picked up a 2-1 lead going into singles competition. Sophomores Zoe Kaffen and Mary Kaffen picked up the first victory of the match with their 8-2 decision at line one. The Tigers dropped the second doubles match at line two, but Andrea De Leon and Francesca Canjar weathered out their match at line three and came away with the 9-8 (2) win.
The momentum carried over into singles play, and M. Kaffen was able to pick up a straight set win (6-4, 6-3) at line four to put the Tigers up 4-1. Caroline Kutach suffered a rare loss at line one, but Z. Kaffen as able to earn a solid 6-3, 7-5 win at line five.
Canjar then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 line six victory, and De Leon picked up the final point for the Tigers with a hard fought 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at line two. Ashley Debauge was the last match left on the court at line three, but despite her best efforts, she fell just short with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) loss.
The Tigers will take on 11th-ranked Amherst College tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. (PDT) in Claremont, California.
