Abilene, Texas - The 23rd-ranked Trinity women's tennis team swept hosts McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University by scores of 9-0 on Friday.
In the opener at McMurry, Marie Lutz and Zoe Kaffen won the top doubles match with the tight score of 9-8 (8-6). Liza Southwick and Mary Kaffen took the #2 line, while Caroline Kutach and Andrea De Leon won #3 doubles.
All of the singles matches resulted in straight-sets victories for the Tigers. Southwick won #1 singles, Kutach captured the second matchup, and Lutz was victorious at #3 singles. Mary Kaffen and De Leon represented Trinity at #4 and #5. Francesca Canjar battled her way to a 7-6 first-set win, and then closed out the match in the second stanza.
Southwick fought her way to a 6-1, 6-7, 11-9 victory at #1 singles, as a tiebreaker was played instead of a third set. Kutach's #2 singles match also went to a tiebreaker, with the Tiger sophomore prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
Trinity now stands at 3-1 overall, including a 3-0 mark against NCAA Division III competition.
The Tigers claimed West Region victories on their road trip. Trinity is ranked fifth in the region, Hardin-Simmons is 12th, and McMurry holds a #14 ranking.
The Tigers will NCAA Division II teams St. Mary's (TX) University and Texas A&M University-Kingsville in San Antonio on Saturday, February 18.
