San Antonio - The 23rd-ranked Trinity women's tennis team opened its spring campaign with a 9-0 shutout of Birmingham-Southern (AL) College on Wednesday.

The battle of the day occurred at #1 singles, as Liza Southwick won a tough three-setter. Southwick lost the first set 3-6, and came back to even the match with a 7-5 second-set win. The Tiger senior prevailed 10-8 in a tiebreaker, played instead of a third set.

The rest of the singles matches were all straight-setters. Caroline Kutach played # 2 singles, Marie Lutz had the nod at #3, and Zoe Kaffen competed in the fourth matchup. Andrea De Leon was the #5 singles player, and Francesca Canjar clinched the dual match at #6 singles.

Lutz and Southwick did the honors at #1 doubles, Kutach and Kaffen played the #2 matchup, and De Leon and Cheyenne Duncan prevailed in the third match.

The Tigers will play a pair of games against teams outside of Division III on Saturday.  Trinity heads to nearby Division I University of the Incarnate Word (TX) in the morning, then returns home to host Division II St. Edward's (TX) University.
