#17 Women's Soccer Defeats #10 Hardin-Simmons 3-1

San Antonio - The 17th-ranked Trinity women's soccer team defeated 10th-ranked Hardin-Simmons (TX) University 3-1 Saturday evening.

Much of the first half of the game proved to be a stalemate for both teams, and after over 30 minutes of action, each team had only managed to get off one shot.

Trinity got on the board first though, as Kaity Ward nailed in a goal during the 34th minute of action.

The two teams traded off-target shots, but Trinity went into halftime with a 1-0.

The Tigers remained in control much of the second half, and senior Kristen Canepa was able to drive in the eventual game winner off a rebounded shot from Ward. She then connected with Lindsey Peng on a corner kick in the 67th minute to put the Tigers up 3-0.

The Cowgirls only goal of the game came with just over six minutes remaining in the game off a penalty kick, but the Tigers were able to hang on and walk away with the 3-1 victory.

Trinity moved to 3-0-0 with the win, while Hardin-Simmons dropped to 0-2-1 on the year. This marks the first time the Tigers have defeated the Cowgirls since the 2011 season when Trinity defeated Hardin-Simmons 3-1 in the NCAA tournament, and the first regular season series win since the 2009 campaign.

Kaity Ward recorded her first goal of the season and sixth in her career, and picked up her tenth assist of her career.

Canepa recorded the first multi-goal game of her career with her two goals against the Cowgirls to push her career total to five.

Madison Horner and Lindsey Peng each picked up an assist against the Cowgirls.

The Tigers will travel to Tacoma, Washingon, to take on Puget Sound (WA) University at 4:00 p.m. PDT on Friday, September 7.
