Abilene, Texas - The 13th-ranked Tiger women's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout victory over Occidental (CA) University in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity had four shots on goal in the opening half, but the first period ended in a scoreless tie. Occidental recorded all four of its saves in the first half of play.
After halftime, the Tigers broke through with a goal in the 52nd minute of action. Halleanne Dure provided the assist on what would be the game-winning goal by Chelsea Cole. That also proved to be the only shot on goal of the second half for Trinity.
Shortly after the score, Trinity goalkeeper Paige Wallace recorded two saves over the next 12-plus minutes to keep the Tigers in the lead. Wallace's final save came with less than nine minutes remaining.
The two teams finished dead even with 10 shots each and each goalkeeper recorded four saves.
The Tigers improved to 17-1-1 with its 16th consecutive win, while Occidental ends its season with a 10-3-5 record.
Cole scored her 23rd goal of the year, which was also her eighth game-winning goal. Her 23 goals are tied for the second-most in school history for a single season, needing just one more to tie Trinity's all-time record.
Cole is also now alone in third-place in school history with 55 career goals and would need three more to tie Abby Loar (2008-11) for second on the Tiger career list.
Paige Wallace recorded a season-best four saves in the game, preserving her sixth solo shutout of the year and the 17th overall clean sheet of the season for the Tigers.
Trinity will take on hosting Hardin-Simmons (TX) University in the NCAA Second Round Playoff on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Hardin-Simmons earned a 3-0 win over the University of Puget Sound (WA) to advance to Sunday's second round.
