San Antonio- The 14th-ranked Trinity women's basketball team continued its undefeated season with an 81-58 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Centenary (LA) College on Saturday.
The Tigers started off with a 7-0 run and increased the lead to 18-5 with 2:24 left in the first period. Trinity finished off the opening stanza with a 23-7 lead, shooting 50% along the way.
Trinity led 33-13 in the second quarter at 5:23, and went on to take a 37-22 halftime advantage in spite of a run by the Ladies.
Midway through the third quarter, the Tigers led by 24 points (56-32), and Centenary came no closer than 19 points. The scoreboard read 68-45 in favor of the Tigers after three quarters, as Trinity shot over 57% in the period.
The fourth quarter was more of the same with the Tigers charging ahead to lead by as much as 27 points in the final period.
Trinity's fifth-year Head Coach Cameron Hill recorded his 100th career victory at the helm of the Tigers team. He was honored after the game with a commemorative game ball and brief ceremony recognizing this milestone.
The Tigers upped their season record to 13-0, and now stand at 2-0 in SCAC competition. Centenary dropped to 3-10 and 0-3 SCAC. The two teams will play again February 11 at Shreveport, Louisiana.
Four Trinity players scored in double figures, paced by Monica Holguin's 15 points performance. Holguin shot 6-11 from the field.
Rachel Chavez came off the bench and scored a career-high 12 points on 6-8 shooting. Chavez also tied the team's season high in steals with five in her column.
Trinity's 81 points tied for the team's second-highest season total. Twelve of the 14 Trinity players on the floor scored in tonight's game.
The 21 steals posted by the Tigers were a season high for the home team. Trinity led Centenary 28-12 in points off turnovers, and the deep Tigers bench outdistanced the Ladies' subs 42-17.
The Tigers head to Georgetown, Texas, Friday to take on Southwestern University in an SCAC game at 5:30 p.m. The matchup will mark the first of four conference games on the road.
