San Antonio - The 14th-ranked and undefeated Trinity women's basketball team opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign with a 67-54 victory Friday over Austin (TX) College.
Austin College started the matchup with a 7-0 run until 5:20 into the opening quarter. Trinity tied the score twice, but the 'Roos ended the first quarter on top 15-9.
The second quarter was a different story as the Tigers fought back from a six-point deficit. After tying up the game at 19-19, Trinity went on to lead 24-23 at intermission.
The lead see-sawed in the third quarter, and the game was tied at 32-32 with 5:37 remaining. The Tigers jumped out to a nine-point advantage and held on to a five-point lead after three quarters.
The Tigers continued to work and found themselves up by 12 points halfway through the final quarter. From that moment on, the 'Roos could not close the gap as the Tigers claimed their first conference victory of the season.
The Tigers extended their beginning-of-the-season win streak and now stand at 12-0, and 1-0 in SCAC competition. The Kangaroos dropped to 9-4 and 1-1 in SCAC play. Trinity and Austin College will meet again February 10 at Sherman, Texas.
Elizabeth Balido came off the bench and led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 8-15 from the field. Balido tied a team season-high in points and produced her second-best career total. She also paced the the team with nine rebounds.
Mollie Hughes accounted for 20 points and seven rebounds, while Micah Weaver came off the bench and added 16 points and three assists. Monica Holguin contributed five steals, and Grace Horn and Allison Staley each shelled out four assists.
Trinity's bench led the 'Roos' subs 41-14. Austin College committed 28 turnovers, while Trinity made only 12.
The Tigers conclude their homestand Saturday by hosting Centenary (LA) College in an SCAC contest at 4:00 p.m.
