San Antonio - Trinity senior guard Monica Holguin has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
The versatile Holguin turned in superb performances at last weekend's Cliff Garrison Classic in Conway, Arkansas. The undefeated Tigers first beat host Hendrix College 69-56 and completed the event with a 74-53 win over Rhodes College.
Holguin chalked up 37 points, on 13-18 shooting from the field. She also shot 3-5 from 3-point range and sank 8-10 free throws. Holguin also had outstanding ball control, picking up 10 rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
In the opener against Hendrix, Holguin led the game with 21 points, sinking 7 out of nine shots. Holguin also posted a team-best six rebounds, to go with three steals and three assists. She played only 17 minutes against Rhodes, but led the matchup with 16 points, hitting 6-9 of her shots. Holguin amassed three assists during her short time on the court that game.
Over this season's seven games, Holguin leads the team with 118 points, an average of 16.9 points per contest. Holguin is shooting 55% (44-80) from the field, and 40.7% (11-27) beyond the arc. She has grabbed 36 rebounds (5.1 per game), and has accounted for 20 assists and 14 steals.
Trinity stands at 7-0 on the season, for the best campaign start under Head Coach Cameron Hill. The surging Tigers also have the best start for a Trinity team since the 2003-04 season, when the team opened up with an 8-0 record.
The Tigers will travel to Tacoma, Washington to compete in the Pacific Northwest Tournament. Trinity takes on the University of Puget Sound on December 17, and then meets Pacific Lutheran University on December 18.
