Conway, Arkansas - The Tiger women's basketball team opened the Cliff Garrison Classic with a 69-56 victory over the host Hendrix (AR) College Saturday afternoon.
The two teams played a close game throughout the first quarter, but Trinity took a slim 19-16 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
The Tigers pushed the lead to double digits with a 9-0 run in the second quarter, and broke the game open with a 17-8 edge overall in the period.
Trinity led 36-24 at the half, thanks in large part to a 61.5% (8-13) shooting performance in the second, and nearly 58% shooting for the half.
After halftime, Trinity opened up its biggest lead of the game at 16 points, but Hendrix rallied late in the third quarter to cut the lead to just eight points, at 51-43 in favor of the Tigers.
In the final quarter, the Tigers upped the lead to 10 points (57-47) with 5:15 remaining, and never led by less than double digits again.
Trinity upped its record to 6-0, while Hendrix dropped to 4-3.
Three Tiger players scored in double figures, led by Monica Holguin's game-high 21 points on 7-9 shooting from the field. She also had a team-best six rebounds to go with three steals and three assists.
The Tigers shot 51.1% from the floor, which is their best effort of the campaign. The Warriors were limited to just 29.3% shooting from the field.
Trinity concludes the Cliff Garrison Classic Sunday by taking on Rhodes (TN) College at 11:00 a.m.
