San Antonio - The Trinity women's basketball team continued its opening-of-the-season home stand with an 83-63 victory Sunday evening over LeTourneau (TX) University.
After a slow start by both teams, the Tigers caught fire and took a decisive 20-8 lead after the first quarter. LeTourneau rallied to tie the game 24-24 with 6:18 remaining in the first half, but Trinity exploded for a 17-3 run to close the quarter. Trinity led 41-27 at the intermission.
A 25-14 third quarter gave the Tigers what proved to be an insurmountable 66-41 lead. LeTourneau did outscore Trinity 22-17 in the fourth, but Trinity still finished with an 80-point night.
Trinity shot 50% in the second and third quarters, and limited LeTourneau to 31% and 20% shooting, respectively.
The Tigers shot over 46% for the game, and the YellowJackets hit less than 29% of their shots. Trinity's bench led LeTourneau's 33-18 in scoring. The hard-charging Tigers also had 16 fast-break points, to four for the YellowJackets.
The Tigers improved to 2-0, while the YellowJackets dropped to 0-2.
Mollie Hughes led the game with a 20-point performance, shooting 5-6 from the field, and sinking 9-10 free throws. Hughes also tied for the team's lead with seven rebounds.
Micah Weaver finished with 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench, shooting 8-11 from the field, and also added four steals and three assists.
LaTanya Drakes of LeTourneau had a double-double of 19 points and 21 rebounds, while Crystal Jones scored 17 points.
Trinity will host the University of Texas-Dallas at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.
