Seguin, Texas - The 12th-ranked Trinity women's basketball team had its undefeated season halted with an 85-78 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference loss to Texas Lutheran University on Saturday.
In the opening quarter, the Tigers led 19-10, with 1:12 on the clock. Trinity went on to take a 19-13 lead at the end of the first stanza, shooting 56% along the way. Micah Weaver led the Tigers in the first quarter picking up 7 points.
The Tigers went up by nine points at 4:07 in the second quarter. The Bulldogs cut Trinity's lead to five at 1:34 which would prove to be the final scoring play of the first half for both teams. The Tigers led 37-32 at the end of the half.
The third quarter belonged to Texas Lutheran, as the Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 23-8. TLU shot nearly 53% and prevented Trinity from making many second chance shots. The score was tied at 37-37 when Texas Lutheran took a double-digit 50-39 lead at 3:52. The third quarter ended with TLU leading 55-45.
Down by 11 points with 7:14 left in the game, the Tigers continue to battle back, cutting the gap to six (54-60). The Bulldogs led by 13 points (72-59) with 3:19 remaining on the clock, and then again at the 1:51 mark (76-63). Trinity showed true grit as they went on an 8-1 scoring run and tightened the game to 71-77 with 41 seconds remaining.
A three-pointer by Rebecca Gordon put the Tigers within five points (76-81) with 20 seconds left. TLU sank two free throws, but Monica Holguin pushed down the court to make a layup with 12 seconds on the clock. The Bulldogs put away late free throws to maintain the advantage as they put the first blemish on Trinity's scoresheet this season.
The Tigers now stand at 14-1 overall, and are 3-1 in SCAC competition. Texas Lutheran improved to 12-3 and 4-0 SCAC. The two teams will battle it out again February 4 in Sams Gym on the Trinity campus.
Micah Weaver entered the game from the bench and led the Tigers with a team season-high 25 points. Weaver shot 9-13 from the field, sank 6-7 free throws and shelled out two assists.
Monica Holguin recorded her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Holguin shot 6-14 overall and went 5-6 at the charity stripe. She also led the team with three assists and tied for the lead with three steals.
Trinity continues its SCAC road schedule Friday, January 20 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Tigers then take on the University of Dallas Sunday, January 22 in Irving, Texas.
