San Antonio - Trinity swimmers turned in strong performances on the opening night at their Trinity Tiger Invitational on Friday at Palo Alto College Aquatic Center.
The Tigers are competing against four teams from the NCAA Division II, three from Division III, and one from the NAIA. Trinity's women's team is ranked 23rd in the NCAA Division III.
Mabel Fowler set a school record in winning the women's 500-yard freestyle, touching the pad in 4:59.36.
Jacob Hurrell-Zitelman won the men's 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.22. He outswam his DII opponent from Henderson State (AR) University by 0.34 seconds. Hurrell-Ziteman's time was three seconds faster than his mark at last year's Trinity Tiger Invitational.
The women's 200-yard freestyle quartet of Fowler, Star Rosales, Morgen Reyna, and Libby Goode placed second behind Henderson State by 0.30 seconds, at 1:37.43. Trinity won the consolation title in 1:38.14, with swimmers Elizabeth Nelson, Meghan Magill, Abbie Jones, and Paige Johnson.
The women's 400-yard medley relay team of Fowler, Reyna, ,Rosales and Jadyn Trahan finished as runners-up to Henderson State, clocking in at 3:56.00, a half-second behind the winners.
The second day of the three-day meet starts at 10:00 a.m. Saturday with swimming preliminaries and diving (women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter). The swimming finals begin at 5:30 p.m.
