Lawrence, Kansas - Trinity's Jacob Hurrell-Zitelman took on some of the best collegiate men's swimmers in the nation, and earned a medal for an eighth-place finish Saturday at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Open Water National Championships.
The Tiger junior swam the rigorous 5k course at Lone Star Lake in 59:52.14. His time was 35 seconds behind the champion from the University of Missouri.
The 62-field event, hosted by the University of Kansas, consisted mainly of NCAA Division I and Division II swimmers. A number of the swimmers compete for their countries in world championships.
To show the depth of the field, Hurrell-Zitelman swam a faster time than the contingent from Texas A&M University.
The Tiger swimmers will compete October 26 at the UIW Invitational. The event will be hosted on the nearby University of the the Incarnate Word (TX) campus.
