Swim Teams Defeat Centenary to Open 2015-16 Season

Montgomery, Texas - The Tiger men’s and women’s swim teams opened their fall schedules with dual-meet victories over Centenary College on Saturday.

Trinity’s men defeated Centenary 141-62, and the Tiger women won 180-18. The meet was held at the Montgomery ISD Natatorium.

Andrew Thiesse was the winner of two men’s individual events, the 100-yard backstroke (55.27 seconds), and the 500 freestyle (4:55.35). Andre Paganin-Newlands captured the 50 freestyle (21.99) and the 100 freestyle (48.66). The 100 butterfly went to Audie Embesto, who swam the event in 53.85.

The Tiger men also won three relay events, including the 200 freestyle. The team of Newlands, jah Johnson, Gordon Allan, and Jake Spitz recorded a winning time of 1:29.41. The 200 medley relay first-place honors went to Johnson, Colton Smith, Spitz, and Nathaniel Adams, who clocked in at 1:19.14. Thiesse, Allan, Spencer Adickes, and Newlands won the 400 freestyle relay, at 3:19.01.

Ashley Ward was a women’s double individual winner, in the 100 backstroke (1:01.90) and the 100 freestyle (57.50). Kara Beauchamp took the 100 breaststroke (1:11.46), Lindsay Hagmann won the 50 freestyle (25.14), Paige Johnson was victorious in the 100 butterfly (1:01.95), Bethany Rysak held the top position in the 200 freestyle (2:01.86), and Lauren Cuda placed first in the 500 freestyle (5:30.23).

Trinity’s women also won three relay titles. The 200 freestyle relay went to Katie Spitz, Rysak, Althea Hesson, and Hagmann, with a winning time of 1:45.21. The 200 medley relay was won by Samantha Michaelson, Beauchamp, Cuda, and Hagmann, at 1:56.74. The 400 freestyle relay belonged to the Trinity quartet of Hagmann, Ward, Spitz, and Ivy Claflin, who touched the final board in 3:51.23.

The Tiger swimmers and divers will host McMurry University Saturday, October 24, in Hixon Natatorium. The diving competition is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., and the swimming events will start at 2:00 p.m.
