Shreveport, Louisiana – Trinity's softball team opened up the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 7-2 loss against Schreiner (TX) University on Friday.
Schreiner started off the game with two solo home runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, then added three more runs in the second to pull in front 5-0.
Trinity got out of a jam by stranding the bases loaded in the third to keep the lead at five runs, then the Tigers got on the board in the fourth to make it 5-1.
Schreiner added two insurance runs in the sixth, but Trinity loaded the bases with no outs in an attempt to rally in the seventh.
The Tigers managed to get one run in on a fielder's choice, but Schreiner retired the next two batters to finish off the win.
The Tigers fall to 17-22 this season, while Schreiner improves to 17-24 with the win. Trinity leads the season series 3-2 against the Mountaineers after winning three of four regular season matchups.
Brianna Pena connected on her 15th double of the season in today's game, breaking the Tiger single-season record set by Jamie Williams in 2006 and tied by Rebecca Berreth in 2017.
Monaco also scored one of the two runs for the team, while Pena had one run and one RBI. Stephanie Crumrine drove in the other run for the Tigers.
Allie Holbrook (10-11) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over the first 1.2 innings of the game.
Trinity will play the loser of Friday's game between Southwestern (TX) University and Centenary (LA) College tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in the second elimination game of the tournament.
