San Antonio - The Tiger softball team lost 5-0 and 14-8 in a season-opening doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran (WA) University on Saturday afternoon.
The doubleheader started with two scoreless innings, but the Lutes broke through with a pair of runs to take the lead in the third. That would be all the visitors would need in game one, as Pacific Lutheran earned the opening-game shutout. Pacific Lutheran added two more runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead, then tacked on an insurance run in the fifth to complete the scoring.
Trinity was held to just four hits in the first game, allowing five runs on 10 hits and committing the game's only error. The seventh inning was the only real scoring threat as a leadoff single and a two-out single put two runners on, but the Lutes finished off the shutout by inducing a pop fly to second.
The second game began with PLU getting on top early with a run in the first and then two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The visitors blew the game open with a six-run fourth, then added three more in the fifth and seemed ready to cruise to another victory.
The Tigers had other plans, though, exploding with the best offensive inning of the day for either team with seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth. All seven runs came with no outs in the inning and kept the game from ending on a run-rule. Trinity had four doubles as a team in the inning, and Adrienne Edwards had two of the team's seven hits in the frame.
That would be as close as the game got, though, as Pacific Lutheran added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and Trinity stranded a pair of runners to finish off the sweep.
Trinity drops both games of a doubleheader to start the season for the third time in seven season under Head Coach Brandi Dolsen. Pacific Lutheran also opened its 2019 season today, and the two schools met for the first time since splitting a doubleheader at Trinity in 2014.
Marisa Trevino had two of Trinity's four hits in the opening game, finishing the day with a pair of doubles among her three hits and driving in two runs in the prolific fifth inning of game two.
Adrienne Edwards went 3-5 with a double on the day and was the only Tiger player to have a multi-hit game in the finale.
Trinity was plagued by four errors in the second game, leading to several unearned runs. The Tigers finished with eight hits overall, though seven of those came in one inning. Pacific Lutheran had 25 total hits on the day.
Trinity continues its homestand to open the year, hosting McMurry (TX) University in a doubleheader next Friday, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
