Abilene, Texas – Trinity's softball team opened up its season by sweeping both games of a road doubleheader against McMurry (TX) University, winning 6-5 and 7-4.
The two teams battled it out in an extra-inning affair to start the season, with the Tigers taking advantage of three errors in the top of the eighth to score the eventual game-winning run.
McMurry tied the game at 3-3 with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then Trinity took the lead with a two-run seventh. The Warhawks responded with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning to extend the game.
The Tigers had three runs on six hits over the first two innings, and McMurry plated just one run in the bottom of the first and it was a 3-1 game for the next several innings.
Game two was much more lopsided from the start, as Trinity scored four times on four hits in the first inning of action. The Tigers added three more in the third to go ahead 7-1 in the game, with Rebecca Berreth hitting a two-run homer in the inning.
McMurry scored twice in the third and again in the fourth, but Trinity starter Adrienne Edwards pitched three shutout innings without allowing a hit to close out the doubleheader.
Trinity improves to 2-0 on the season, which marks the first time since 2011 that the Tigers have opened the season with a doubleheader sweep.
Brianna Pena (1-0) picked up the win in the opening game, allowing no runs on just one hit over the final 1.1 innings. Adrienne Edwards earned the complete-game victory in game two, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out five batters. Game one starter Allie Holbrook also recorded five strikeouts in her collegiate debut.
The bottom third of the Tiger batting order was especially effective with all three players picking up two hits. Stephanie Crumrine and Emily Vaclavik both went 2-4, while Hailey Wilson was 2-3 with one run and one RBI.
Jones had two hits and scored twice in game two, while Danielle Ruiz was 2-3 with one run and one RBI.
Rebecca Berreth picked up three hits to go with two runs and two RBI, smashing her first home run of the young season in the third inning of game two.
The Tigers will finish off its season-opening road trip with a Saturday afternoon at Hardin-Simmons (TX) University beginning at noon.
