Trinity Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader With Texas Lutheran

San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers and Texas Lutheran Bulldogs split a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday at the Trinity Softball Field.

Texas Lutheran won the opener 3-2, and Trinity took the second game 8-0, invoking a run-rule in the fifth inning.

The Tigers now stand at 3-3, and the Bulldogs are 3-1. The two teams will meet again March 10 in a doubleheader at Seguin, Texas.

Trinity held a 2-0 lead in the first game, with one run in each of the third and fifth innings. Tiger junior rightfielder Rachel Garrett (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) scored from third base on a passed ball in the third inning. Garrett accounted for Trinity's second run, as first-year first baseman Kayleigh Kinlaw (China Spring, Texas/China Spring) collected an RBI in the fifth.

The Bulldogs put up a run in the sixth inning, on an RBI double by shortstop Nicole Hatley. Then, Texas Lutheran scored two runs, on three hits and one Trinity error in the top of the seventh.

Megan Carmichael (2-0) took the win for the Bulldogs, and sophomore right-hander Colbie Devost (Houston/Lamar) had the loss, in spite of striking out seven batters. Devost (1-2) allowed two earned runs, nine hits, and four walks. Trinity produced two earned runs, five hits, and committed one error, while Texas Lutheran had one error in the game.

The second half of the DH was all Trinity, starting with two runs in the first inning. First-year shortstop Brooke Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall) started things off with an RBI single to center field. Kinlaw had an RBI on a SAC fly to left field.
 
Trinity continued its pace with four runs in the third. A highlight was made by sophomore catcher Becca Rush (Sugar Land, Texas/Travis) who cracked a two-RBI single to left field.

The Tigers scored a run in the fourth, and clinched the game with one run in the fifth. Junior center fielder Karen MacPherson (Allen, Texas/Allen) scored  from third base on a throwing error, as the game ended. In the opener, MacPherson batted 2-4. She is now three hits away from reaching 100 in her career.

Sophomore first baseman Megan Russell (Fort Worth, Texas/Boswell)  batted 3-4 in the game, with one run. Sanchez hit 2-2 with an RBI and scored a run. Rush produced two RBI, while going 1-2 at the plate, with one run. Senior designated hitter Teresa Greppi (Dyer, Ind./The Culver Academies) batted 2-3 with an RBI.

Sophomore right-hander Sydney Friday (Sugar Land, Texas/The Kinkaid School) was credited with the victory. Friday (2-1) pitched the shutout and allowed three hits, one walk, and chalked up three strikeouts.

Trinity scored six earned runs, smacked 11 hits, and did not make an error. Texas Lutheran made two errors in the game.

Next up for the Tigers is a non-conference doubleheader Saturday in Austin, Texas, with Concordia, starting at 4 p.m. Concordia swept a DH from Trinity last Sunday at the Tigers' field.
