Abilene, Texas - Six Trinity singles players and three doubles teams advanced during Friday's action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Championships, hosted by McMurry (TX) University.
The Trinity contingent is competing exclusively in the "A" Singles and Doubles draws.
Tyer defeated Jimmie Henson of LeTourneau (TX) University in two sets, and then beat 15th-seeded Kenneth Hardy of Austin (TX) College. The first set against Hardy went to Tyer after a tiebreaker, followed by a 6-0 score in the second set.
Settles won two tiebreakers from Preston Spivey in the opening round, and then took a third-set breaker from 13th-seeded Giovanni Zamboni of the University of Texas at Dallas.
Eighth-seeded Wilson Lambeth won his first two matchups in straight sets and now faces #9 Joshua Bode of Concordia (TX) University.
#11 Jace Akagi-Okuma was also a straight sets winner and meets sixth-seeded Alex Hunt of Hardin-Simmons (TX) University in the round of 16.
Pitts and Lambeth are the top seeds in the 32-draw Doubles event. The Tiger tandem convincingly won their first two matches and will play the eighth-seeded team of Hunt and Nathaniel Schoendorf of Hardin-Simmons in the quarterfinals.
Settles and Lars Wiik had the most dramatic day of the Tigers, winning each match by a score of 9-7. The Trinity team first beat Christian Farris and Jimmie Henson of LeTourneau, and then took out #6 Zamboni and Ashwin Vaithianathan of UT-Dallas. Up next will be McMurry's Carlos Martinez and Chase Daniell.
The "A" Singles and Doubles champions advance to the ITA Cup at Rome, Georgia, to be held October 11-14.
The singles round of 16 is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Saturday, followed by the quarterfinals at 11:00 a.m. The doubles quarterfinals are slated for 3:00 p.m. and the semifinals for 5:30 p.m. There is also consolation play on the docket.
