Georgetown, TX - The 14th-ranked Trinity men's tennis team fell 5-4 to Southwestern (TX) University and defeated McMurry (TX) University 6-1.
The Tigers started the day with a tough match against Southwestern and found themselves down 2-1 after doubles.
The Pirates were able to grab the first two points of the match with wins at lines three and two doubles, but Wilson Lambeth and Jordan Pitts were able to earn an 8-4 win at line one to prevent a Southwestern sweep.
In singles, Lambeth was able to earn a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at line three to tie the match, and then the Tigers were able to take the lead as Jace Akagi-Okuma was also able to pull out a two-set victory at line four.
Tilden Oliver won the next point for Trinity at line five to expand the lead, but Southwestern was able to take the next two points at lines six and one to tie up the match.
The Pirates took the final point with a win at line two, as Pitts lost a tough 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 three-set match.
The Tigers were able to recover in their second match of the day with a win over McMurry, beginning with a 2-1 advantage over the Warhawks in doubles play.
Lambeth and Pitts got things going at line one with a strong 8-4 win, and Oliver and Akagi-Okuma followed suit with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
The momentum carried into singles, as Austin Crist pulled out a 6-3, 6-1 win at line six to make it a 3-1 match. Akagi-Okuma also earned a solid victory at line three, defeating his opponent 6-0, 6-2. Pitts was able to clinch the match at line two with a 6-4, 6-2 win at line two, and Lambeth followed suit with a two-set win at line one to bring the score to 6-1.
Lines four and five singles were left unfinished.
Trinity will head to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to compete in the SCAC Championships on April 20-22.
