San Antonio - The 16th-ranked Trinity men's tennis team earned their eighth straight win with a thrilling 7-2 victory over 30th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler.
The Tigers earned a 2-1 advantage after doubles competition, which energized the team going into singles. Wilson Lambeth and Jordan Pitts notched their eleventh straigth win in the top spot with an outstanding 8-3 win. Wilson Hamilton and Jace Akagi-Okuma wrapped up their match next with a close 8-6 victory at line two, but Tilden Oliver and Lars Wiik fell just short at line three.
Wiik didn't let the doubles loss slow him down though, as he earned a straight-set victory at line six to put the Tigers up 3-1. Pitts was next off the court at line two after his opponent retired with Pitts leading 7-6, 4-1.
Akagi-Okuma was able to clinch the match with his 6-4, 6-4 win at line four, marking his eighth straight singles victory. Hamilton came off the courts next with a 7-6, 6-1 win in the top spot. Oliver was not quite able to pull off a victory at line five, but Lambeth hung on at line three to come away with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win to earn his sixth straight singles win.
Trinity will return to action Saturday, April 14 for a doubleheader in Georgetown. The Tigers will take on Southwestern (TX) University first at 9:00 a.m. and wrap up the day with a 1:00 p.m. match against McMurry (TX) University.
