San Antonio - The thirteenth-ranked Trinity men's tennis team rallied to defeat Division II St. Edward's 5-4 Friday evening.
The Tigers got off to a great start after earning a 2-1 lead after doubles, then were able to split the six singles matches to take the team win.
Wilson Lambeth and Jordan Pitts picked up the first point of the day at line one with a strong 8-3 victory. Lars Wilk and Tilden Oliver put up a good fight, but the Toppers earned the win at line three to tie things up. Trinity was able to finish off the doubles portion strong, as first-years Wilson Hamilton and Jace Akagi-Okuma pulled out an 8-6 victory at the number two spot.
Akagi-Okuma then made quick work of his opponent at line four (6-3, 6-3) to pick up the first singles match of the day. St. Edward's responded by picking up the win at line one to cut the Tiger lead to just 3-2.
Hamilton then rallied in his match at line two to pick up a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 victory, but the Toppers picked up the next two matches at lines three and five to tie things up. The match came down to Wilks at line six, and the first-year handled the pressure the well as the home crowd cheered him to a 7-5, 7-6 victory to clinch the match for the Tigers.
Trinity will return to action tomorrow to host Laredo (TX) Community College at 10:00 a.m.
