San Antonio – Trinity's 13th-ranked men's tennis team opened up the spring season by being swept by Division I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-1 and 7-0.
Trinity opens the season with a record of 0-2, while A&M-Corpus remained unbeaten at 3-0 so far this year.
The day began with the Islanders sweeping three doubles matches from the Tigers to lead 1-0, though the line two team of Wilson Lambeth and Jace Akagi-Okuma had a hard-fought 9-7 loss in the closest match of the day.
A&M-Corpus earned three straight-set wins in singles to clinch the match, then took a 5-0 lead with a win at line two singles. Akagi-Okuma then scored Trinity's lone win of the day with his 6-4, 6-4 singles victory at line three.
The two teams shuffled the lineups somewhat for the second match, but the Islanders were still able to hold off the Tigers with the sweep.
Akagi-Okuma and Wilson Hamilton made a bid for line two doubles, but fell short in a 9-7 loss that helped A&M-Corpus finish off doubles with all three lines.
The top line of singles proved to be the clincher, but Jordan Pitts battled to the end at line two singles. Pitts lost 6-7 (3-7), 4-6 in the tightest singles contest of the final match.
The Tigers hit the road February 10-11 for a three-match weekend in Washington. Trinity begins with matches against the University of Redlands (CA) and Lewis & Clark (OR) College on Saturday.
