Abilene, Texas - The Tiger men's tennis teams split a pair of matches at the Abilene Christian University Indoor Championships, falling 6-3 against hosting ACU, but defeating Tyler Junior College 7-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (2-2) also split a pair of matches on its first day of competition on Friday. The Tigers blanked Hardin-Simmons 9-0 to start the spring season, then fell in a 7-2 match against Oklahoma Christian.
Charlie Curtis was the only Tiger player to win in singles during both contests on Saturday. He took a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 win at No. 5 against Abilene Christian, then won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 against Tyler JC. Curtis was the only Trinity point in singles in the ACU match.
Erick DelaFuente and Jordan Mayer teamed up for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles on Saturday. The duo won 8-6 against both ACU and Tyler JC to help the Tigers start off with a 2-1 lead in both matches.
Greg Haugen and Connor Dunn went 1-1 in doubles, winning in the early matchup, but then falling in the match against Tyler JC. Haugen also went 1-1 in singles, losing 3-6, 4-6 in the ACU match, but winning 7-5, 6-3 in his final match of the day.
Also scoring singles wins against Tyler JC were Nicolas Moreno (7-6, 6-4), Brandon Thompson (6-4, 6-4), and Dunn (default). Moreno and Aaron Skinner also won 8-3 in doubles during the Tyler JC victory. Skinner was 0-2 on the day in singles - including a tough three-set defeat against Tyler.
Trinity resumes play on Wednesday, hosting Gustavus Adolphus College in the 2013 home opener at 5:00 p.m.
