San Antonio - The sixth-ranked Trinity men's soccer team scored a goal with 44 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to beat Texas Lutheran University 2-1 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday night.
Neither team was able to get a goal in the opening period and even though Trinity led 9-3 in overall shots, it was Tiger goalkeeper Blake Lieberman who recorded a pair of saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board. Trinity managed just one on-target shot among its nine attempts.
Less than five minutes after halftime, Texas Lutheran was awarded a foul just outside the 18-yard box and the Bulldogs converted the free kick into a goal that put the visitors on top 1-0.
As the clock ticked under 20 minutes remaining, Trinity's Jacob Hallenberger slipped a shot towards goal that bounced off the right post, but Wesley Mitchell pounced on the loose ball and immediately tied the game at 70:34.
The game remained tied as both teams managed just one more shot on goal through regulation.
In overtime, Lieberman made a key save as Texas Lutheran found space for a potential game-winner in the 96th minute.
With less than 90 seconds left in the first overtime, Andrea Codispoti's attempt glanced off the post and it looked like another overtime period was coming.
Hallenberger had other ideas, though, taking a pass from Codispoti near midfield and then fighting off a defender down the field before finding just enough space to fire in the game-ending goal with just 44 seconds left.
Trinity won its third straight game to improve its overall record to 11-1-1 and 9-1-0 in the SCAC, while Texas Lutheran dropped to 6-5-0 and 5-4-0 SCAC.
Jacob Hallenberger scored his fifth goal of the season, as well as recording the second straight game-winner. Hallenberger also took over the team lead with five assists in his column.
Wesley Mitchell scored his third goal of the campaign.
Blake Lieberman saved four shots and now has 32 this season.
Trinity led Texas Lutheran 24-7 in total shots, and held a slight 7-5 advantage in shots on the mark.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday, October 16, in Seguin, Texas.
Trinity continues its SCAC week of action by hosting the University of Dallas (TX) at noon Sunday.
