Sherman, Texas - The fourth-ranked Trinity men’s soccer team opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference road weekend with a 7-0 shutout of Austin College on Friday afternoon.
Defending conference champion Trinity improved to 6-1-0 and 2-0-0 SCAC, while Austin College dropped to 0-4-0 and 0-1-0. The two teams will meet again October 24 in San Antonio.
Johnny Lawson scored the opening two goals for the Tigers, in the 12th and 24th minutes of play. Lawson, scored for the fourth consecutive game, and has now netted a team-best five goals. Victor Araujo and Simon Uribe supplied the respective assists.
Derrick Horvath and Murray Fraser combined for a goal in the 44th minute of play, which gave the Tigers a 3-0 halftime advantage.
Goncalo Santana scored in the first six minutes of the second half, on an assist from Tom Carwile. Then, eight minutes later, it was Carwile’s turn to enter the scorer’s column, as he was assisted by Araujo and Roberto Camargo.
Nate Dauphin and Daniel Ruano put the finishing touches on the game, scoring a pair of goals in the final minutes. Claudio Calistri and Omar Sanchez provided assists.
Matt Cardone was the starting goalkeeper, and faced Austin College’s one shot on goal. Chad Margotta stepped in for the entire second half. Trinity’s offense fired up 18 shots on goal.
The Tigers travel to Irving, Texas, for a Sunday SCAC
encounter with the University of Dallas at noon.
