San Antonio - Trinity senior Danny Rivara was named this year's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Elite 19 award winner, in a league announcement made at the conference tournament on Friday night.
The SCAC Elite 19 is awarded to the student-athlete who has at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA, at least 60 credit hours and earns All-SCAC honors for that particular season. A student-athlete will be honored annually from each of the league's 19 conference-sponsored sports and will be recognized at the site at that year's conference championship event.
Rivara currently holds a GPA of 3.533 and was voted to the All-SCAC Third Team for his performance this season. The award was presented by SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry during halftime of Trinity's SCAC Quarterfinal game against Centenary (LA) College.
The sixth-seeded Tiger men pulled off a 65-63 upset over #3 seed Centenary to finish the first day of action at the tournament, advancing to tomorrow's semifinal matchup against tournament host and #2 seed Texas Lutheran University.
During tonight's game, Rivara led Trinity with 20 points on 8-12 shooting, becoming the 26th player in Trinity history to score 1,000 points in a career. Coming into the season, there were just 105 players in SCAC history that had reached the milestone. He scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half, no doubt inspired by the halftime ceremony and prestigious Elite 19 trophy he received.
