San Antonio - The top-seeded Trinity baseball team opens play at the NCAA Division III Regional at Texas Lutheran University on Friday.
Led by 21st-year Head Coach Tim Scannell, Trinity (34-10) takes on fourth-seeded Franklin (IN) College (26-13) at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the four-team, double-elimination event. Second-seeded host Texas Lutheran (31-12) meets #3 Concordia (TX) University (34-10) in the other opening-day game at 4:30 p.m. Ticket prices for each day are $10 general admission, $5 for students and children 12 and under, and children two and under are free.
Winners bracket and elimination games are scheduled for Saturday, with the championship game set for Sunday. The winner of the regional will advance to the NCAA Super Regional, which will be a best-of-three series between another regional winner that will take place May 24-25. The winners of the Super Regional will advance to the Division III Championships May 31 through June 5 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Tigers will make their 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and the first since 2016. After winning a Regional that year in Spokane, Washington, the Tigers advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, and brought home the National Championship Trophy.
Trinity earned a trip to the DIII World Series in 2015 by winning its first Regional Championship. The Tigers came within one game of advancing to the best-of-three finals series.
This year, Trinity garnered an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional by winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. The Tigers beat Texas Lutheran twice on May 5 to capture the conference crown at Cleburne, Texas. It marked Trinity's 12th overall conference championship and the 11th during Coach Scannell's tenure.
Three of the Regional teams are ranked nationally by D3baseball.com. The Tigers are ranked fourth, Texas Lutheran is 13th, while Concordia holds a #24 ranking.
