San Antonio - The top-ranked Tiger baseball team lost both games in their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against #8 Texas Lutheran University on Saturday.
Trinity lost the opening game 12-4 and was edged 9-6 in a 10-inning thriller to cap the series.
Texas Lutheran started the day with seven runs on seven hits in the first inning and never looked back in the lopsided game.
The Tigers did answer with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run double with two outs by Dalys Binder.
The visitors got all three runs back in the top of the second and then added another score in the top of the third to take an 11-3 lead over Trinity.
Trinity scored its final run of the game in the fifth inning, while the Bulldogs added one more run in the ninth to account for the final score.
The Tigers stranded 13 total base runners in the game, leaving at least one runner on base in all nine innings.
Texas Lutheran got the scoring started early again in game two, scoring once in the top of the first to take the 1-0 lead. The Tiger defense kept it from being a big inning by picking a runner off of first base and then finished the frame with a double play.
Trinity tied the game in the bottom of the inning after Brannen Caraway came around to score after his leadoff double.
The Bulldogs continued to score, though, piling up three more runs in the second and third to take a 4-1 lead over the Tigers.
In the bottom of the third, Trinity tied the game with three runs on four hits, but they did left the bases loaded and were unable able to take their first lead of the day.
Texas Lutheran got a two-out RBI double in the third to go back in front, then added an insurance run in the eighth with another two-out rally to take a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jake Martin laced an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field to tie the game. The Tigers had the winning run on second with just one out, but couldn't pull off the comeback.
Texas Lutheran took advantage of two walks and two errors to bring in three unearned runs that proved to be the difference.
Trinity brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but stranded two more runners to finish off the evening.
Trinity had its 10-game winning streak snapped and now stands at 17-5 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC. Texas Lutheran improved to 15-6 and 2-1 SCAC.
Jake Martin batted 7-10 in the two games, drove in three runs, and scored three in the process. He hit 4-5 with three RBI in game two, and his home run was the second in as many days. He is now tied for the team lead with four round-trippers in his column.
Dalys Binder drove in three runs in the doubleheader with two coming in the opener.
Arjun Thakar took the mound in relief in the opener, allowing one run on three hits over 6.1 innings and striking out a career-best eight players in the process.
Corey Cater (3-1) was the hard-luck loser in game two, striking out five batters in 2.1 innings and allowing just two hits and three unearned runs.
The Tigers will host the University of Chicago (IL) at 7:00 p.m. Monday.
