San Antonio - The Trinity baseball team is now ranked #1 in the NCAA Division III by the latest D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll.
Led by Head Coach Tim Scannell, the Tigers moved up from the third position. Trinity has amassed 616 points and is 38 ahead of #2 Christopher Newport (VA) University. The Tigers held the top slot for five weeks during the 2018 campaign.
Trinity stands at 15-3 and is on an eight-game win streak prior to Tuesday night's home game with NAIA member Our Lady of the Lake (TX) University. The Tigers went 4-0 last week, defeating Millikin (IL) University and sweeping the University of Dallas (TX) 3-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opening series.
Pitcher James Nittoli is tied for first nationally in victories with an undefeated 5-0 record, while senior Jeff Lonnecker is ranked 13th in saves with three to his credit. Outfielder Jake Martin is ranked eighth in runs scored with 23 in his column.
The Tiger team has successfully executed 19 double plays this season and are fifth in the nation in the category. They are also ranked 11th in runs with a collective 145 and 13th in hits with 196 to their credit.
Following Tuesday's game with Our Lady of the Lake, the Tigers will host eighth-ranked Texas Lutheran University in a SCAC series over the weekend. Friday's single game begins at 7:00 p.m., and the first pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
