#3 Baseball Starts SCAC Play With DH Sweep at Dallas

Irving, Texas - The third-ranked Trinity baseball team opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Dallas (TX).

 

GAME SUMMARIES

The Tigers won the first game 10-4 and took the second half of the doubleheader 9-2.

Both teams went without a hit until Dallas rattled off four hits in the bottom of the third. The Crusaders scored twice in the inning to take a 2-0 lead, but Trinity's defense got a double play to escape further damage.

That score held until the top of the sixth when the Tiger offense finally came to life with three runs on three hits to take a 3-2 lead. Mason Meredith and Blake Johnson drove in the first two runs, then Trinity took the lead after a failed pickoff attempt with runners on the corners.

Dallas hit into another double play in the bottom of the sixth, which sparked Trinity to another strong inning on offense. The Tigers hammered out five hits on their way to five more runs to make it an 8-2 advantage.

MJ Metz set the tone for the inning with a leadoff homer, followed by back-to-back doubles by Logan Morrison and Jake Martin. Rafe Chaumette drove both of his teammates in with a two-RBI single to right field. 

Dallas got back in the scoring column in the seventh, but Chaumette drove in two more Tiger runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 10-3. The Crusaders finished off the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth, but Trinity's lead was too much to overcome.

Trinity scored the first nine runs of game two, cruising to a relatively easy victory to finish the day.

Jake Martin's two-out solo homer in the third started the Tiger scoring, then the visitors added two more runs in the fourth to make it 3-0.

Trinity scored two runs each in the sixth and seventh, as Blake Johnson drove in three of the four runs to put his team in front 7-0.

After the Tigers finishing its scoring with runs on sacrifice flies from Chaumette and Metz in the eighth, Dallas finally got on the board with its only two runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning.

 

NOTABLES

Trinity won its seventh consecutive game and improved to 14-3 overall and 2-0 in SCAC competition. Dallas dropped to 10-7 and 0-2 SCAC.

MJ Metz batted 2-4 with two runs scored and his second homer of the season in game one.

Jake Martin hit his first round-tripper of the season in game two, keeping the team lead with 21 runs scored.

Rafe Chaumette batted 3-5 in the first game, drove in four runs, and scored two others. Chaumette hit 4-8 with five RBI and three runs scored in the pair of games, and is tied for the team lead with Mason Meredith with 16 RBI.

Blake Johnson went 3-5 with four RBI in the second game, driving in five runs on the day.

Mark Tindall (3-0) earned the after allowing two runs on five hits through five innings to start the opening game, as well as picking up six strikeouts.

Corey Cater tossed four innings to earn his second save of the year, giving up two runs on five hits to go with five strikeouts.

James Nittoli (5-0) won game two with an excellent seven-inning performance, yielding two runs on three hits and striking out six batters. 

Carter Fronk allowed just one hit over the final two innings, recording four strikeouts to finish off the Tiger victory.
