Abilene, Texas – The #1 Trinity baseball team finished off a three-game weekend series sweep by defeating Hardin-Simmons (TX) University 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity got the scoring going with three runs on three hits in the third inning, then added single runs in each of the next three innings to push it to a 6-0 advantage.
Hardin-Simmons broke up the shutout with a run in the bottom of the seventh, then staged a two-out rally in the ninth. The Cowboys got a pair of runs across to cut into the Tiger lead, but Trinity was able to avoid a repeat of last night's ninth-inning rally and win the game.
Trinity stranded the bases loaded three times in the game, just missing the chance to turn the game into a blowout win.
Trinity improved its record to 23-2 overall, having won 17 of its last 18 contests. Hardin-Simmons fell to 10-20 with the loss.
Brendan Meyer (5-0) tossed just the second complete game of the year for the Tiger pitching staff. Meyer scattered nine hits over the nine-inning game, allowing three runs and a pair of walks, and striking out five batters.
Logan Morrison and John Tucker paced the Trinity offense with three hits each, accounting for half of the team's total. Morrison was 3-5 with a run scored, while Tucker was 3-5 with two runs and two RBI.
The Tigers are back on the road for a Tuesday night game, taking on Concordia (TX) University at 7:00 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
