Seguin, Texas – The top-ranked Tiger baseball team opened up a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series with a hard-fought 5-4 win at #12 Texas Lutheran University on Thursday night.
After three scoreless innings, Trinity broke through with a run in the top of the fourth. The Tigers took advantage of a leadoff walk to bring in the game's first run.
Texas Lutheran didn't trail for long, though, tying the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. The Bulldogs then took the lead with a leadoff homer in the sixth, followed by two more runs scored to push the lead to 4-1.
In the eighth, the Tigers were back on the board with two more runs to take a 5-4 lead. John Tucker doubled in Logan Morrison to tie the game, then Michael Davis drove in Tucker for the go-ahead run and a 5-4 lead.
The Bulldogs put the tying run on with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Tiger reliever Corey Cater was able to finish off the series-opening win.
Trinity improved to 18-1 overall with its 12th consecutive victory, as well as remaining unbeaten at 7-0 in conference play. Texas Lutheran fell to 20-5 and 2-2 in SCAC with tonight's loss.
John Tucker picked up three of Trinity's seven team hits in the game, going 3-4 with a double. He was one of five different Tiger player to drive in a run, and Tucker also came around to score a run as well.
Corey Cater (1-0) picked up his first win in his sixth relief appearance this season. Cater pitched 3.2 scoreless innings to finish off the game, yielding three hits and striking out six batters. Brendan Meyer lasted 5.1 innings as the Tiger starter, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out five batters.
Trinity and Texas Lutheran will continue their holiday weekend series with a Friday afternoon doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
