Georgetown, Texas - Great pitching led the seventh-ranked Trinity baseball team to strong 9-0 win over Milikin (IL) University on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers got on the board quickly, scoring three runs in their half of the first inning. Trinity was able to take advantage of two hits and Milikin's two errors in the inning, including a two-out wild pitch and throwing error that allowed the Tigers to score their third and final run of the inning.
Tiger pitchers James Nittoli, Jeff Lonnecker, and Kevin Flores combined for the shutout and took a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Millikin opened the ninth with a base hit to break up the no-hit bid, but Flores was able to preserve the shutout with a game-ending strikeout.
After a relatively quiet second inning, Trinity responded with a two-run third to make it a 5-0 game. Mike Davis drove a triple to right-center to get the scoring starting, and Parker Cormack finished it off with a ground out to third base to bring home Davis.
Zach Oretsky made it a 6-0 game after four innings, while Michael Goodrich drove in three more insurance runs with his double down the right field line that emptied the bases in the bottom of the fifth to expand the gap even further.
Trinity now sits at 10-1 this season, while Milikin dropped to 7-3 with the loss.
Sophomore James Nittoli started the game for the Tigers and pitched six full innings, recording eight strikeouts without allowing a hit.
The Tigers will return home Tuesday, March 13, to take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX) at 4:00 p.m.
