Alpine, Texas - The Tiger baseball team opened up a three-game weekend series with a 5-4 extra-inning win over Sul Ross State (TX) University on Friday night.
Trinity loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the 12th inning, then Scott Walters drew a five-pitch walk to drive in Logan Morrison for the game-winning run. Morrison nabbed an infield single with one out to jump-start the Tigers.
Sul Ross actually took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but Trinity quickly tied things up with its own run in the second.
In the bottom of the third, the Lobos put together a two-out rally that featured two walks and three hits. Sul Ross scored three times to take a 4-1 lead.
That score held until the sixth, when another one-out Morrison hit started Trinity's comeback. Jake Martin's two-run homer tied the game 4-4, leading to the extra innings.
Trinity out-hit Sul Ross 10-6 in the game, but the Tigers did not allow a hit after the sixth inning.
Chris Tate (1-0) earned the victory in relief for Trinity, throwing the final 6.2 innings without allowing a hit, walking just one batter, and recording eight strikeouts.
Logan Morrison and Jake Martin picked up two hits each, and were key hitters in the Tiger victory. Morrison added two runs - including the winning score - and Martin picked up two RBI on his first homer of the season.
Scott Walters had a triple and drew two walks in the game, collecting his second RBI of the season.
Rafe Chaumette went 2-4 with two walks, reaching base four times in six plate appearances. He also scored a run and drove in another.
Trinity and Sul Ross continue their series with a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday afternoon, followed by the series finale at noon on Sunday.
