Tigers Kick Off Season at TLU Preview

The men's and women's cross country teams headed to Seguin, Texas for their first away meet Saturday. Both teams finished third overall in their respective races, with team captains Maddie Murphy and Sal Perdomo leading the way individually.

In the women's race, Murphy, a sophomore, finished seventh place. She was the first Division III runner, with a time of 18:19.3 for the 5,000m distance. Murphy's time puts her 2nd all-time in Trinity history and a 20 second personal best. Rounding out the top five were freshman Michelle Oberndorf (18:39.4) in eleventh place, followed closely by sophomore Rosemary Steup (18:41.3), sophomore Vanessa Moreno (19:15.9) in fifteenth place, and freshman Jessica Pagano (19:37.4), who took the nineteenth spot. Oberndorf, Moreno, Pagano, and Joy Lindig all had times that moved them in to the top 20 in school history. The race was won by unattached runner Amy Shackelford, who took the win in a time of 17:42.6. The Tigers finished third overall in the team standings, trailing UTSA, who finished first with 21 points, and Texas State, who grabbed second with 47 points.

Sophomore Sal Perdomo led the way for the Tigers in the men's race. He was the first Division III runner to cross the line. The race was shortened last minute, to 7600 meters, due to dangerous conditions on a section of the original course. Perdomo finished sixth place overall with a time of 24:43.8. Sophomore Pancho Escobedo followed in fourteenth overall (25:20.0), while Mark Greene and Gerardo Hernandez finished within a second of each other, holding 17th and 18th places respectively. In the final scoring position was freshman Connor Amoruso, completing his first race in a Trinity uniform by placing thirty-first in a time of 27:01. UTSA amassed 22 points to take the team win, led by a trio of runners who took 1st through 3rd individually in a near three-way tie. Texas State was second in the team standings with 48 points, while Trinity held onto the third spot with 73 points.
