Rosemary Steup and Maddie Murphy Earn Individual Spots to Nationals
Seguin, TX- The cross country team competed at the South/Southeast Regional Championship meet hosted by the TLU Bulldogs. The top 35 individuals earn All-Region honors, with the top two teams advancing to the NCAA Championships and the first seven individuals (that are not members of the top two teams) qualifying as well.
First up was the women's race. The Tigers finished fourth overall with sophomores Rosemary Steup and Maddie Murphy earning individual slots to the NCAA Championships with their fifth and sixth place finishes. The sophomore duo ran 22:52.9 and 22:53.9, respectively, for the 6 kilometer course. First-year Michelle Oberndorf finished 21st overall with a time of 23:53.2, and first-years Jessica Pagano (24:28.4) and Autumn Kervella (24:37.8) rounded out the top five with 33rd and 37th place finishes, respectively. The top four Trinity girls received All-Region honors, doubling the amount they had last year.
The men finished 11th out of the 23 schools that competed. Leading the way for the Tigers was Junior Francisco Escobedo, finishing 19th with a time of 27:10.6. This marks the first time that Escobedo has earned All-Region honors. 38 seconds back, in 38th place, was junior Mark Green with a time of 27:48.8. Making his first entrance into the top three was junior Max Robinson, running 28:32.0, good enough for 66th place. Rounding out the top five were Gerardo Hernandez (28:36.9) and Brandon Douglas (28:49.6).
Next up, the sophomore pair of Rosemary Steup and Maddie Murphy will travel once again to the NCAA Championships next Saturday. The meet is hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Winneconne, WI.
