Cross Country Teams Open Season with 2 Mile Race in Brackenridge Park
The Tigers started their season with a 2-mile race in Brackenridge Park. Both men and women took second place behind Division I, UTSA. Junior Robert Edmonds (San Antonio, TX) and Senior Caitlin Masse (Katy, TX) won their respective individual races.
On the men's side, Edmonds's time of 9:41 was a new Trinity best for the annual 2-mile race. Edmonds also notched his first cross country win as a Tiger by surging away from the field in the last quarter mile. He was followed closely by sophomore standout Sal Perdomo (Irving, TX), who finished a mere five seconds back in 9:46. Senior Zach Brush (Edmond, OK) was the third Tiger finisher and seventh overall, running the course in 10:00. The sophomore duo of Pancho Escobedo (San Antonio, TX) and Mark Greene (San Antonio, TX) rounded out the Trinity top five with times of 10:08 and 10:10, respectively. Freshman Josh Carter (Joplin, MO), who was only ten seconds back from Mark Greene, proved to be the standout newcomer for the men. The team was eight points shy of UTSA, who won the meet with 28 points.
On the women's side Masse finished the course with a time of 11:38 - her fastest time yet on the course - with freshman Rosemary Steup (Kingwood, TX) finishing fourth overall with an impressive time of 11:52. First-year Vanessa Moreno (El Paso, TX) was only fourteen seconds back from Steup with a seventh place overall finish. Rounding out the top five were first-years Maddie Murphy (Friendswood, TX) and Jackie Newell (Frankfort, IL) who placed eleventh and fourteenth overall. This marks the first time in history where Trinity has had first-year runners in four of the top five spots.
The Tigers will return to action in nine days against a primarily Division I field at the Texas A&M Invititational. The Aggies have changed the schedule from years past and with have the college division race on Friday night instead of Saturday morning. The women will run a 5k at 6:20pm while the men will race their first 8k of the season at 7:20pm.
