Trinity to Host SCAC Championships in Seguin Saturday
San Antonio – Trinity University will serve as the host institution for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships Saturday in Seguin, Texas.
The championships will take place on the campus of Texas Lutheran University, with the start of each race to be held on TLU’s main intramural field. The men’s 8k event begins at 9 a.m., and the women’s 6k at 10 a.m. A total of 10 men’s teams, and 10 women’s will compete for the top prizes.
The top 14 finishers in each race will be named to the All-SCAC Teams. In addition to the team titles, the individual winners of the championships will be honored as SCAC Runners of the Year. The first-year runners with the best times will be named SCAC Newcomers of the Year.
Colorado College is the defending men’s champion and DePauw will defend its women’s title. Trinity’s men placed third at the 2009 SCAC Championships, and the Tiger women finished fifth. The event was held at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, Ga.
At last year's women's SCAC Championship race, DePauw’s Lauren Reich placed first with a time of 22:12.46, and Trinity's Caitlin Masse of Katy, Texas (Cinco Ranch) was second at conference, clocking in at 22:41.71.
This season, Trinity’s five first-years will look to
better last years’ performance. Rosemary Steup of Kingwood,
Texas (Kingwood), has led the Tigers throughout the season. Her
first place finishes at the DIII Little State Championships and the
UIW Invitational put her in the record books for both the 5k and
6k. Maddie Murphy of Friendswood, Texas (Friendswood) and Vanessa
Moreno of El Paso, Texas (Horizon) will be other key runners
looking for an All-Conference finish for the Tigers.
On the men’s side, Junior Jackson Brainerd of Colorado
College will look to defend his first place finish from last year.
Junior Robert Edmonds of San Antonio, Texas (Health Careers) has
led the Trinity Tigers during the season, including a fourth place
finish at the UIW Invitational. His time of 26:50 placed him 10th
all-time for the Tigers. Edmonds earned All-Region awards during
his first cross country season last fall. He will be looking for
his first All-Conference finish on Saturday. Senior Zach Brush of
Edmond, Okla. (Edmond North High School) will be another key Tiger
in this weekend’s championship race. Brush was 11th at the
2009 SCAC Men’s Championship.
Leading the Trinity teams are 11th-year Head Coach Jenny Breuer
and first-year Assistant Coach Derick Lawrence.
This year’s South/Southeast Regional is scheduled for Nov. 13
at Memphis, Tenn., with SCAC member Rhodes College serving as the
host school. The NCAA Championships are slated for Nov. 20 at
Waverly, Iowa. Wartburg College is the host institution.
