San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men's and women's cross country teams, led by head coach Jenny Breuer, will compete Saturday at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional at Greensboro, N.C.
Hosted by Guilford College, the top two teams, and seven individuals not on the qualifying teams, will advance to the NCAA Championships Nov. 14 at Highland Hills, Ohio.
The women's 6k regional race begins Saturday at 11 a.m. Eastern, and the men's 8k event starts at noon. The top 35 runners earn All-Region honors.
Fourteen Tiger runners, seven men and seven women, will compete in Greensboro.
Trinity's women captured last year's regional, held at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. It marked the second time in school history the Tigers took the regional title. The unranked Tigers went on to the NCAA Championships at Hanover, Ind., where they finished sixth as a team.
Emily Loeffler, now a member of Trinity's Athletics staff, was the regional runner-up with a time of 22:27. Junior Caitlin Masse of Katy, Texas (Cinco Ranch), picked up All-Region honors, for the second time, with a 13th-place finish (23:11). Masse placed second at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships two weeks ago in Conyers, Ga. Trinity finished fifth as a team.
Krissy Ford, a junior from Jackson, Miss. (St. Andrew's Episcopal), was 18th (23:38) at the 2008 regional.
The Tiger men placed seventh in the 2008 regional, and third at last month's SCAC meet. Senior Bryant Wright of Tulsa, Okla. (Holland Hall), was runner-up in the 2009 SCAC race, and No. 6 in last year's regional (25:42), qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Also making the 2008 All-Region Team were senior Chass Armstrong of Boerne, Texas (Boerne), 31st place, 26:58; and junior Zach Brush of Edmond, Okla. (Edmond North), 32nd place, 26:59.
